Plastic and Wood: The Future of Quimbley’s

Plastic and Wood: The Future of Quimbley’s

It’s hard to believe that even a few months ago, nobody knew Quimbley’s Toys & Games even existed. We were all working furiously behind the scenes to launch the Mystery Package and build our foundations.

The partnership with Petersen Games was in place, the inventory was ready to go, and the future was constantly in a state of flux. Now that our feet are under us, the time has come to talk about that future.

We have always wanted communication to be open and honest, and so as we’ve seen growing concerns from our customers, we wanted to share our plans and make sure we’re being clear about where we see this company going.

What concerns, you might ask?

Primarily quality concerns and whether or not wood pieces will be replacing the plastic miniatures you’ve all come to love with Petersen Games over the years.

The short answer is: no, wood will not be replacing plastic.

The long answer is:

When we set out to build our own factory and produce games and toys here in the United States, we knew that plastic manufacturing would not be in our first phase of construction. Plastics require a lot of tooling, different machines, and expertise we just didn’t have.

What we did have were printers and cutters that worked amazingly with wood. That being the case, with many of our ancillary products (think display cases and boxes), we’re focused on wood. The quality and tactile power of wood have proven to be very exciting to a lot of people, including us.

We’re in development on quite a few wood-based products, including wood versions of some of our games (announcements forthcoming!). Those wood-based games will include wooden standees of the characters to go along with the theme of the wooden game and to make them more affordable for gamers.

But that love and focus on wood will not be removing plastic production from our plans, both short-term and long-term.

As we are in production on Hyperspace, The Gods War 2, and other late Petersen Games Kickstarters, plastic figures are top of mind. Our partnerships with overseas factories are in place for these games so that miniatures will be manufactured as expected. Eventually we will bring that part of production in-house as well, but for now, we’re still using the old ways.

And don’t worry; new games like the upcoming Sandy Petersen-designed Death Dealer will still feature miniatures, as will expansions of previous games that featured plastic pieces.

This process of teaming with Petersen Games and starting the factory side of things has been daunting. Some things we thought would be easy have turned out to be far more challenging, and some of the things we thought would be challenging turned out to be easy. No matter what though, we want to create games and toys that brighten people’s lives.

We want to make a difference. And we want to satisfy all our fans by creating products that are high-quality.

You expected premium games from Petersen, and you can expect the same from us.

We just hope you’ll be patient with us. Since plastic is the one thing we can’t yet produce in-house, it’s going to take longer.

Plastic and wood are both huge parts of Quimbley’s future.

Games will be produced with one or the other material where appropriate, and sometimes with both. In fact, on my desk right now is a plastic prototype of the Storm Bull from Gods War 2. It looks amazing!

And if you want some miniatures now, I’m willing to bet we have a couple (or hundred) on our website right now that you’ve never seen before or played with. I’m talking figures in every horrible shape imaginable to terrorize your games. And there are more to come!

Great things are on the way, both expected and unexpected. We’re grateful you’ve chosen to join us on this journey. Fun is on the way in the form of both wood and plastic.

We sincerely hope you’ll join us for the adventure.
